Course C1: Sea Kayak Basics and Rescues
two courses, each 3 hours

Sea Kayaking, coast of Lake Superior Provincial Park near Gargantua

Paddling and safety instruction is a necessity if you are new to kayaking. Throughout the summer, we offer a morning half-day course " Sea Kayak Basics" and in the afternoon " Sea Kayak Rescues". Those who elect to take both courses receive a $25.00 deduction.

Price: $75 CDN/per half day, $125 full day (taxes included)

Itinerary

In the morning we assemble at Kiwanis Park, Haviland Bay, Lake Superior for Sea Kayak Basics, and in the afternoon for Sea Kayak Rescues. We introduce you to kayak design and equipment, demonstrate the strokes, wet exit, and in the afternoon practice rescues. So be prepared to get wet!

Note: you need to bring personal gear/clothing; we provide kayaks, etc. (see equipment list below).

  • 9:00 a.m. Kayak Design, Paddling Gear and Accessories
  • 9:20 a.m. Safety - trip planning, skills, water conditions, hypothermia, communication and signalling devices
  • 9:40 a.m. Getting fitted into wet suits and kayaks
  • 10:00 a.m. - noon. Paddling strokes, wet exit
  • 1:00 a.m. - 4:00 pm. Get fitted into kayak and be prepared to get wet: contact tow, in-line tow, T rescue, solo rescue, stirrup rescue, all-in rescue

Equipment

EQUIPMENT YOU SUPPLY

Paddling gear: Cap, sun glasses, paddling jacket (synthetic windbreaker or rain-suit, preferably with elasticized cuffs), short pants of synthetic material, neoprene booties or water sandals (e.g. Tevas) or running shoes, synthetic long underwear (top and bottom), plastic water bottle, head strap for glasses. A "Farmer John/Jane" wet suit will be supplied by Caribou Expeditions; however, to guarantee a good fit, a wet-suit can be purchased at many outdoor stores.

Note: Paddling clothes should be synthetic, or with minimal cotton.

Personal Gear: Sunscreen, chap stick, bug dope, toilet paper, matches or lighter, soap, etc.





EQUIPMENT AND SERVICES SUPPLIED BY CARIBOU EXPEDITIONS

Kayak and Accessories: The boats we supply are single person kayaks (Necky). Each kayak comes with: sponge, paddle and spare, boat pump, whistle, spray skirt, poggies or neoprene gloves, personal flotation device (lifejacket).

Wet suits are provided. Please indicate your lifejacket size and wet suit size when you send deposit or trip balance.

Accessories: Waterproof dry bags for clothing.

Safety Equipment: First aid kit, marine radio, compass, tow line.

Basic Training: Your instructors are experienced sea kayakers with training from the B.C.U. (British Canoe Union) with training in C.P.R. and Wilderness First Aid.
