This course is designed for kayak owners with previous experience and training. Includes night navigation, high bracing, Eskimo rolling, and surf landings in the wilderness setting of Lake Superior Provincial Park.

While paddling to our wilderness campsite, you will learn new skills along the way. The course offers training equivalent of BCU level 4.

Course Itinerary

You should plan to arrive at the Voyageurs' Lodge (705-882-2504), 60 km north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, or Pancake Bay Provincial Park the evening prior to the tour. We will meet at the Voyageurs' Lodge at 9:00 a.m. on the first morning. From there we will drive to Gargantua Harbour (two hours) where we pack the kayaks and paddle to Warp Bay or Indian Harbour for two-nights, and three-day campout. Training will take place within this wilderness setting.

Note: you need to bring personal gear/clothing, tenting equipment, meals; (see equipment list below).

This course is for kayak owners with previous experience and training (approximately one hundred hours of paddling).

The course objective is to polish skills, such as paddling strokes, braces, sweeps and rescue skills (both solo and group). In addition you will be instructed in surf landings, eskimo rolling, and night navigation. All will take place in a wilderness setting, where you will learn about kayak equipment required for various conditions.

Day 1

  • Navigation

    • You will learn to read basic information from a map and chart, identify shoreline hazards, lights, bouyage, distances, estimated time to travel
    • learn basic compass skills, identify position, night navigation, and planning a route.

  • Advanced paddling skills

    • high braces
    • advanced turning and leaning strokes

  • Group Rescues

    • All-in

  • Evening Revue

    • review equipment and procedure, and discuss 'true to life' scenarios.

Day 2

  • Practice group safety and leadership skills; each person will lead group for a portion of the day.
  • Accident simulation, on-water boat repair (e.g. leakage), injuries and rescues.
  • Night navigation. We will practice leading a group in the dark, and night navigation.

Day 3

  • Eskimo Rolling - we will spend most of the morning on learning and practicing eskimo rolls.
  • Surf-landings - we should be back at Batchawna Bay by 1:30 PM on Sunday to practice surf landings; helmets are provided.

The course will end at 3:30 p.m.

Equipment

    

EQUIPMENT YOU SUPPLY

Paddling gear: Cap, sun glasses, paddling jacket (synthetic windbreaker or rain-suit, preferably with elasticized cuffs), short pants of synthetic material, neoprene booties or water sandals (e.g. Tevas) or running shoes, synthetic long underwear (top and bottom), plastic water bottle, head strap for glasses. A "Farmer John/Jane" wet suit will be supplied by Caribou Expeditions; however, to guarantee a good fit, a wet-suit can be purchased at many outdoor stores. Optional: Hand-held sighting compass.

Note: Paddling clothes should be synthetic, or with minimal cotton.

Personal Gear: Sunscreen, chap stick, bug dope, toilet paper, matches or lighter, soap, etc.

EQUIPMENT AND SERVICES SUPPLIED BY CARIBOU EXPEDITIONS

Kayak and Accessories: As this course is for experienced paddlers, you should provide your own kayak and camping gear. However, we can rent supply kayaks and wet suits should you require them. Each kayak comes with: sponge, paddle and spare, boat pump, whistle, spray skirt, poggies or neoprene gloves, personal flotation device (lifejacket).

Camping accessories: You should supply your own camping equipment, but if you prefer to rent from us we can supply: tent, thermarest, camp grill, coffee pot, water purifier, 19 ft. shelter tarp, camp saw, cookstoves, fuel, camp cookery, dishes, dry bags

Safety Equipment: First aid kit, marine radio, compass, tow line.

Basic Training: Your instructors are experienced sea kayakers with training from the B.C.U. (British Canoe Union) with training in C.P.R. and Wilderness First Aid.
