Descending through the densely forested Canadian shield, the Goulais River valley, west of Searchmont, in northern Ontario, offers a leisurely canoeing day trip on mild current, interrupted at times by several rapids. This is a day-trip for those wishing to practice Class II whitewater. We offer this trip as a guided canoe or kayak tour, but canoe and kayak rentals and shuttles are available.

This relaxing day-trip is just a short half-hour drive from Sault Ste. Marie. A great way for a group to enjoy a spring adventure. Given enough notice, we can customize a trip for your own group on alternative dates.

We provide canoes, shuttle and lunch, So relax, meet us at our base and begin your guided canoeing adventure!

Trip Itinerary

This day-trip begins at our base on Goulais Bay (thirty km north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on the Trans Canada, then 11 km west on Hwy 552). Camping is available the night prior to the tour at the at Pancake Bay Provincial Park, just a 60 km north of Sault Ste. Marie on Hwy 17, or a KOA campground just 25 km north of the city. There are numerous lodges and motels in the area.

The Goulais River winds through a spectacular steep wooded valley of precipitous cliffs. The current is swift at times with some Class II rapids. River water temperature is usually above 16 degrees C (61 degrees F) by late May.

Note: you need to bring personal gear/clothing; we provide lunch, kayaks, etc. (see equipment list below).

  • Day 1. At 9:00 a.m. we assemble at our base on Goulais Bay, get fitted into gear, discuss canoe and kayak safety procedures, load the trailer and transport everyone to the put-in on the Goulais River - west of Searchmont (a forty minute drive). Personal vehicles will be left at our base on Goulais Bay. After our guides demonstrate wet-exits and safety procedures, we guide you down the river valley, stopping for lunch (provided) and several breaks along the way. We arrive at the take-out by 4:00 PM and are back at Goulais Bay by 5:00 p.m. to end our canoe day trip adventure on the Goulais River.

EQUIPMENT YOU SUPPLY

Clothing: It may appear from the following list that you will be preparing for an arctic adventure! However, these clothes should keep you comfortable under poor weather conditions: warm jacket (i.e., for fall conditions) or windbreaker with pile/fleece (e.g. Polartec) liner or wool sweater, long-sleeved shirt, t-shirt, warm wool or synthetic socks, one pair of pants, shorts, swim suit, undergarments, small towel.

Paddling gear: Cap, sun glasses, paddling jacket (synthetic windbreaker or rain-suit, preferably with elasticized cuffs), short pants of synthetic material, neoprene booties or water sandals (e.g. Tevas) or running shoes, synthetic long underwear (top and bottom), plastic water bottle, head strap for glasses. A "Farmer John/Jane" wet suit will be supplied by Caribou Expeditions; however, to guarantee a good fit, a wet-suit can be purchased at many outdoor stores. Optional: Hand-held sighting compass.

Note: Paddling clothes should be synthetic, or with minimal cotton.

Personal Gear: Sunscreen, chap stick, bug dope, toilet paper, matches or lighter, soap, etc. On day trips, we will have enough "river" bags to accommodate most clothing, but bring ziplok bags for snacks and small articles.

EQUIPMENT AND SERVICES SUPPLIED BY CARIBOU EXPEDITIONS

Canoe/Kayak and Accessories: Novacraft Prospector Royalex canoes (16 ft or 17 ft), or Prijon Tandem polyethylene kayaks (17 feet). Each canoe/kayak comes with: sponge, rope, paddles and spare, boat pump, whistle, spray skirt (kayaks), poggies or neoprene gloves, personal flotation device (PFD/lifejacket), dry bags for clothing.

Wet suits are provided. Please indicate your lifejacket size and wet suit size when you send deposit or trip balance.

Accessories: Waterproof dry bags for clothing.

Safety Equipment: First aid kit, marine radio, compass, tow line.

Basic Training: Canoe/kayak white-water instruction.

Experienced Guide: One guide per six clients. Your guides are experienced sea kayakers with training from the B.C.U. (British Canoe Union), C.P.R. and Wilderness First Aid. As well, your guides are experienced outdoors people who will help identify and interpret the flora, fauna and geology around you.

Vehicle Shuttle, Camping Permits: Transportation is provided back to trip departure point. Back-country permits are included.

Meals: Lunch is provided. Please notify us of any dietary restrictions.
