" If you know the dates of the Sibley to Rossport trip, could you please e-mail them to me. That was such a fantastic trip two years ago that I'd like to do it again. "

Lee Bjerke, Madison, WI

This sea kayak tour is designed for the experienced sea kayaker with a taste for adventure and independence. You will be guided through this remote wilderness archipelago of northern Lake Superior: home to wolf, deer and moose, this area is road-less, and accessible only by water craft. Designated to become a National Marine Park, the Black Bay Peninsula and offshore islands is a sea kayaking paradise.

As long as you are willing to provide your own meals, just meet us at the Rossport campground and we take care of the shuttles, permits, guiding and camping equipment. Bring your own kayak and deduct $20/day.

"Thank you for the wonderful trip. It surpassed all my greatest expectations. I will recommend it and your service to any kayakers I know (and canoeists!). "

Chris Viegut, Marshfield, WI

Trip Itinerary

The trip begins at the town or Rossport, approximately 490 km west of Sault Ste. Marie on the Trans Canada Hwy (Hwy 17). Camping is available the night prior to the tour at the Rainbow Falls/Rossport Provincial Park, just a mile east of Rossport on Hwy 17. There is excellent accommodation nearby at the Rossport Inn (Toll Free: 1-877-824-4032). Note: meals are not provided on this tour. A suggested food list is shown below. We supply stoves and cookware. You must supply sleeping bag and clothing (see equipment list).
  • Day 1 (21 km): At 8:00 a.m. we assemble at Rossport Provincial Park campground. We will then transport everyone to Squaw Bay on the Sibley Peninsula. Personal vehicles will be left at Rossport public parking lot. Safety procedures will be reviewed before departure; however, as this tour is for the intermediate paddler, you must already know and be capable of doing the rescues. After packing the kayaks, we paddle to Magnet Point on the Black Bay Peninsula, passing by spectacular flat top mountains or cuestas. We camp at Island 10 adjacent to Shaganawsh Is.
  • Day 2 (26 km): We paddle from Island 10 through the island chain to Spain and Bordeau Islands for a lunch break, and continue into Loon Harbour for our overnight stay.
  • Day 3 (18 km): If time permits we paddle to the far end of Otter Cove to view the waterfall. We continue to Spar Island where we camp (or Lunch at the north end.)
  • Day 4 (18 km) We will make the crossing to Flour Island, which has a spectacular view of Nipigon Channel, then on to Newash Point. We continue our sea kayaking adventure along the coast north km to Paradise Island or the CPR camp.
  • Day 5 (21 km): Paddle through to St. Joseph's Islands where we will set up camp. There are beautiful pebble beaches in this area ("daisy"stones), as well as a chance to find amethyst in the black lava.
  • Day 6 (16 km): We cross to Simpson Island, passing some pretty coves and unique columnar basalt. There is excellent fishing in the lakes on Simpson Island.
  • Day 7 (11 km): Simpson Island to Rossport. There are numerous channels that we can follow, with many good rest areas. Your guided sea kayak adventure tour in northern Ontario will end at 3:00 p.m.

Meals: are not provided. You must pack your own food and cook for yourself (we provide stoves, pots, fuel, etc.). See a typical food list below.

For tours where meals are not provided, the following is a suggested food list

Most food can be stored in ziplok freezer bags. Double bag items by inserting smaller ziplok bags within larger ziplok bags. Double bag all meats. We pack out all cans and containers.

Some bulky and heavy foods are okay, but dried foods and high energy foods are preferable. Pre-frozen meats will last several days on the bottom of a kayak and preserved meats should last three days. Plan to eat the frozen meats on the first two days. A freezer-pack may extend the range.

Some vegetables and fruits (e.g., carrots, potatoes, onions, lettuce, oranges, and apples) are acceptable for a day or two. Rice mixes, packaged pasta mixes, etc. take up the least space. You should plan a dinner or two with this type of food.

In addition, bring some snack foods (e.g. power bars, trail mix) that you can keep in a ziplok bag on deck.

The following are examples of the types of foods/meals that are suitable.

Breakfast

Hot cereal, with powdered milk or small containers of condensed canned milk; pancakes, maple syrup, even scrambled eggs (premixed in a leak proof tupperware type container) and sausages; oranges, orange juice (crystals), toast and jam. Butter is best from squeezable containers. Bring some oil for the pancakes but make sure you have a leak proof container - test it out upside down overnight.

Lunch

Power bars, trail mixes, dried fruit, peanut butter, preserved luncheon meats, pepperoni, cheese, wafers, carrot sticks, celery sticks, packaged soup, tea or coffee. Pita bread stores well in a kayak.

Dinner

Steak with potatoes (pre-microwave for rapid cooking), onions, salad, buns, coffee; chili (pre-frozen) with salad, rice; pasta with meat sauce (pre-frozen), grated cheese; tacos; frozen lasagna.

Other

mustard, ketchup, sugar, salt, pepper, spices (pkgs. or small containers)
